STAYING SAFE: Behind-the-Scenes with Desiree VanBurger, an Industrial Hygienist
Monday, Nov. 21, 2022
Ensuring the safety of others takes a very skilled and detailed eye. As a senior safety professional certified in industrial hygiene, Desiree VanBurger describes her role as a behind-the-scenes investigator, focused on anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling potential risks in the workplace in order to keep everyone safe.
Desiree knows all the right things to look out for when dealing with workplace safety. Whether she’s acting as a program administrator for the hearing conservation program at Walt Disney World Resort or testing the conditions in a wide variety of workplaces, Desiree is always looking for ways to ensure the safety and well-being of others.
“One of the things I really love about working in safety and industrial hygiene for Walt Disney World Resort is that I get to help be part of ensuring the safety behind the magic, creating a difference in our Cast Members’ lives.”

From encouraging the prevention of long-term risks in the workplace like regularly wearing earplugs in loud environments to prevent hearing loss to testing air qualities to ensure safe work environments, Desiree encourages us all to focus on safety practices that may be overlooked in our work and personal lives.
Desiree reminds us, don’t forget to keep these general safety tips in mind to ensure safety, in and out of the workplace:
-
Wear protective gear: Whether it’s wearing hearing protection when mowing the lawn or proper gloves when handling strong cleaning chemicals, protective gear can help ensure safety at home. Don’t forget to also wear any required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while encountering hazards at work.
-
Learn the ropes: When participating in any work-related training, make sure to pay attention to all safety messages, alerts, and other necessary learnings required.
-
Drive with a purpose: When you’re on the road, make sure to focus on the task at hand. Distracted driving can lead to several risk exposures that may result in long-term injuries. Always make sure to keep your eyes on the road and follow all general driving rules.

Leaders, did you know you can order Wild About Safety cards, like the one above? There are 22 cards featuring Timon and Pumbaa, reminding us all to be safe in our everyday lives. Encourage your Cast Members to hand out these cards to Guests who are exhibiting safe behavior or to those who might need a helpful reminder. Visit the Wild About Safety HUB site for more information.

STAYING SAFE: Water you waiting for?
Monday, Aug. 1, 2022
The sun is out, and the heat is on. In Florida, there’s always time to soak up some fun! As a recreational coordinator overseeing Disney Resort hotels in the Skyliner Region, Carly Divis has all the right tips for staying safe during your next summer splash.

As a coordinator, Carly describes her role as a front-line view of all things water safety specifically throughout Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Art of Animation Resort, Caribbean Beach Resort, and Riviera Resort. Whether she’s overseeing lifeguards on duty, educating Guests on water safety, or maintaining the mechanical and electrical systems behind the scenes, Carly is always finding new ways to go with the flow.
“Being able to incorporate fun and education into my role has always been a highlight for me,” Carly says. “But even outside of work, it’s important to practice water safety and remind others to do the same.”
Disney’s Wild About Safety Program is a great resource used to keep Guests and Cast informed on how to stay safe throughout Walt Disney World. Carly mentions just how fun these communications can be for Guests. She mentions, “Before our movie nights by the pool, we would always play the Wild About Safety videos for our Guests. The kids love the catchy tunes, and it’s a great way to get them to remember our safety tips.”

As the summer season continues, keep these water safety tips in mind to enjoy some fun in the sun:
-
Lifeguard check: Make sure to check if there is a lifeguard on duty before jumping in.
-
Follow the rules: Certain guidelines are put in place to ensure the safety of all Guests and Cast, like walking on the pool deck. Following these general guidelines can help ensure a safe environment:
-
Always swim with a friend, and make sure children are never left unsupervised in the water.
-
Make sure to look before diving into the water and never dive in headfirst.
-
When you’re learning to swim, don’t swim too deep and make sure to hold on to the edge of the pool.
-
-
Stay Alert: The weather in Florida can be unpredictable during the summer. Make sure you are monitoring the weather around you and prepare for any unexpected storms. If you hear thunder or see lightning, make sure to get out of the water. And don’t forget to apply and reapply lots of sunscreen, even on cloudy days!

Following the rules, staying alert and checking for lifeguards on duty are the best ways to prevent accidents and injuries. But most importantly, Carly reminds us all to have fun in the sun! “The summer is the perfect time to explore recreational activities. Bring your buddies and make a splash! Just make sure you’re staying safe in the water.”

Leaders, did you know you can order Wild About Safety cards, like the one above? There are 22 cards featuring Timon and Pumbaa, reminding us all to be safe on our next adventure. Encourage your Cast Members to hand out these cards to Guests who are exhibiting safe behavior or to those who might need a helpful reminder. Visit the Wild About Safety HUB site for more information.
